Sunday 31 August, 2pm: Al Jolson’s smash hit The Jazz Singer (1927), a silent film with synchronised songs and dialogue in isolated sequences, heralded the commercial ascendance of sound film. The Lights of New York (1928) was the first “all talking” full length feature film.
