Newsreel Nostalgia at the NFSA
Marking 50 years since the end of the newsreel era
Before television, the weekly newsreel at the pictures gave us our visual window on the world – hot from the spot to the screen. Cinesound Review and Movietone News were national icons. It is 50 years since the newsreel disappeared from cinemas, and to mark the moment the National Film and Sound Archive has compiled some newsreels and short subjects into the kind of program you might have seen in a city newsreel theatrette in the 1930s.
The program will run at 12.30 in the NFSA Theatrette on weekends from Saturday 6 December until the end of February. If you live in Canberra, or plan to visit the national capital over summer, do visit the NFSA to check it out.
To launch the program, Ray Edmondson, President of the Friends, will provide an introduction to newsreels in the Mediatheque, at 12 noon. So, come along, bring your friends, get a cuppa from the cafe, and be ready to learn - or reminisce - about the glory days of the newsreel!
