This unusual and fascinating film was released in 2018, as a study of Dr Barry Jones AC, one of Australia’s outstanding thinkers. Producer, editor and director for his doctorate at the Australian National University, Sturgess worked with Jones on scripting the film from words largely drawn from Jones’s autobiography A Thinking Reed. The film focuses on his childhood, adolescence and early adulthood, and the influences which shaped his life. It examines the unique power of film as a medium for political biography.
The film was nominated for the best documentary film at the 2019 London Portobello Film Festival. Garry has practised as a barrister, but is principally involved in media and publishing. The Garry Sturgess Collection of interviews is held at the National Library of Australia.
